Purston Infant School

About our school...

Ethos

Learning through first hand experiences are central to the ethos of Purston Infant School. It is our philosophy to promote a child centred environment one which emphasises the importance of learning through fun and enjoyment.

Location

Featherstone lies between Wakefield and Pontefract and is close to both the M62 and Al. The school traditionally serves the area south of the Pontefract/ Wakefield railway line and east of Station Lane and Girnhill Lane which includes both rented accommodation and private housing. The majority of children generally move on to St Thomas Church of England Junior School and then on to Featherstone High School.

Purston Infant School stands in approximately two  acres of land. The main single storey building comprises a hall, four classrooms, a central shared area and a Foundation Unit.

There is also an administration block sited near the main entrance.

To the south side there is a raised hardcore play area, with markings to assist in imaginative play, seating, and elevated gardens overlooking the school. To the north side there are playing fields and a wildlife conservation area. This area is used for playtimes weather permitting, sports and investigative work within the curriculum.

Organisation

The school is classified as an infant school with a nursery catering for the education of boys and girls between three and seven years old.

From September 2009 there will be two intakes into full-time education throughout the school year. Thus children whose fifth birthday is between the 1st September and the 31st March are admitted in September. Those whose fifth birthday is between the 1st April and 31st August are admitted in January. (Under current regulations children do not have to start school until the term following their fifth birthday.)

Classes are organised, as far as possible, in year groups : foundation stage (nursery and reception),  Year 1 (middle infants), and Year 2(top infants.)

Children transfer to St Thomas C.E Junior School at the start of the Autumn term if they have had their seventh birthday before the first of September.

Foundation Stage

The foundation stage comprises lower and upper foundation. Through a broad and balanced early years curriculum the children work towards achieving their early learning goals. This will naturally lead them into the work of Key Stage 1 and the National Curriculum.

Years 1 and 2

During these years children will continue working through the programmes of study and attainment targets at levels appropriate to their abilities, aptitudes and interests. An average child is expected to reach level 2 by the age of seven. The curriculum planned by the staff will aim for breadth, balance, continuity and progression whilst at the same time providing challenge and enjoyment.
